Pre-Wimpole 2000 FC

Before we go in to how Wimpole 2000 FC came about, it is important at this juncture to write a little about the earlier years leading up to where we are today.

It has to be said that if it were not for Terry and his wife Carol and their enthusiasm for football through their son’s, we would not have the club we have today.

Their passion grew through the enjoyment they could see it gave not only their son’s, but other children too.

Terry enlisted the help of Steve to assist him during the early youth years and formed a good working partnership.

Our sole purpose was to provide football for anyone who genuinely wanted to play no matter what background. When our position became untenable at our previous club (because we only wanted to help kids play footie and not get involved in its politics and greed… oh, by the way that club is no longer in existence), we decided to start our own club and Wimpole 2000 FC was formed.

WIMPOLE 2000 F.C.

As the name suggests, the club was formed in the year 2000 by founder members Steve Mycroft, Terry and Carol Rudd. All three founders are still very active in the club today.

We started with two youth teams when in the Colchester and District Youth League – one in the Under 16’s and one in the Under 18’s. We remained in this league until that unfortunate time (or maybe that should have been fortunate time…..) that they were no longer classed as youth.

2003-4 Season

We joined the Colchester and East Essex League and at that time we only had one team.

It was during that season we were fortunate to find a sponsor to help fund the club, without the sponsorship, it is doubtful that we would still be running as a club today.

Our sponsor, a London based company is still supporting the club present day.

We (both founder members and players) are very proud to be associated with Paresh and his company City Belts and Bearings Ltd.

During our first season we were involved in a game that made not only local but national and international news headlines both on TV and Newspapers. It was a match that made us famous for all the wrong reasons.

We were new to men’s football, being our first season and not having the skills to match those more experienced players; we were on a hiding to nothing – literally NOTHING!! We were 18-1 down and then the referee stepped in and scored our second goal losing 20-2 to Earls Colne reserves.

As you can imagine, it didn’t take long for the news to spread amongst the local teams and it then became hot news, the team even made local TV with a film crew making a small film about our exploit and even then they still didn’t manage to hit the ball in to the net!! Click to see film. This was a massive turning point for the team and they were determined NOT to go through that type of loss again. The rest of the season they poured their hearts and souls into every game.

 2004-5 Season

After our humiliating defeat and through sheer determination for the rest of the previous season, we gained enough points to be promoted to the 2nd division.

Nothing as eventful happened during this season, but the foundation stones were laid and to their credit the lads played some really good football . It provided what they needed and a promotion was on the horizon.

 2005-6 Season

This season we saw the teams popularity grow and a lot of interest from other players wanting to join our club. We had another good season of football finishing runners up in 2nd division, this gave us the vital points required to be promoted to the 1st division. Also we were the winners of the Jenkins Shield trophy.

 2006-7 Season

As we went from strength to strength, we had an influx of players wanting to join. What could we do to accommodate these players that wanted to “just play football”? There was only one thing we could do and that was to form a Reserve team. So there we have it; a 1st team and a reserve team.

The 1st team reached the ¼ finals of the Amos and Bromley cups and the semi final of the league knock out cup.

During this season, we were fortunate enough to gain another sponsor, this sponsor provides us with after match hospitality for both 1st and reserve teams and visitors alike.

We (both founder members and players) are very proud to be associated with Peter and his staff at The Grapes Pub – Mersea Road, Colchester.

 2007-8 Season

This season was a really good season for both 1st and Reserve teams. The reserves continued to strengthen their position within the league tables, which enabled them to gain promotion from the 3rd division to the 2nd division.

The 1st team finished runners up in the 1st division and promoted to the Premier division,

They were runners up in the Amos cup, reached ¼ finals of the Bromley cup and reached area semi finals of Essex junior cup.

We also became the first 11-a-side club in our league to have a “Synthetic Turf Pitch” (STP) as our home pitch.

2008-9 Season

As we come to the close of last season, it proved to be quite eventful again; with the 1st team winning the Bromley cup (hooray!).

Also runners up in the Amos cup, and reached ¼ finals of the league knockout cup.

The Reserves gained promotion to the 1st division and reached the semi finals of the Lexden Memorial Cup.

Well that is our history in a nutshell – all news for 2009-10 and future seasons will feature on the News and Events Page.
